A line from history

Villa Carovo — the little hotel by the bay

The house on the Carovo shore is woven into Kraljevica’s story for more than a century. A wrought-iron weather vane once dated the build to 1898; the plot already appears on a cadastral map from 1905. In 1929, Slovenian readers found it in print as “Villa Carovo — Obiteljski dom / Familienheim”: a genteel villa above a quiet cove at the entrance to the Bakar Bay, with its own park, bathing in front of the house, electric light, plumbing and a rowing boat put at guests’ disposal.

For locals who remember the 1970s, the same place was simply Hotel Carovo: the terrace lined with chairs where parents sipped coffee after swimming, children dashing over from Velika plaža for ice cream, and guests from the small terraced camp next door filling the restaurant. The rhythm of the day moved between beach, terrace and kitchen without hurry.

Decades later the bay has changed—many former “terraces” carry homes from the 1980s onward—yet the curve of the water and the name CAROVO 7 still echo that shoreline. The old hotel wing is weathered today, but its silhouette remains part of how Carovo greets the sea.
